How To Pick The Right FBO Airport For Your Business

3 January 2023   Monmouth Jet Center

Are you a private or charter plane company owner searching for the best Fixed Base Operator (FBO) airport for your business? Choosing the right FBO airport is essential because all of your clients will come and go through this airport, and you need the amenities to be top notch. Here are a few things you should look for when choosing a FBO airport for your business

High-Quality Customer Service

Great customer service is important in every industry, and you should choose a FBO airport that makes high-quality customer service its number one priority. Everyone will be positively affected by great customer service: the pilots, the ground crew, your clients, and yourself. You should feel like the staff at your FBO airport go above and beyond to give you an exceptional experience, every time.

Location & Runway Class

Location is key, and we recommend choosing an FBO airport that gives you easy access to several major cities, and any major highways or public transportation centers. Your clients will appreciate the convenience and they’ll enjoy the flexibility of being able to visit numerous destinations when using a single airport.

You’ll also want a FBO that has runways designated for non-commercial jets, because as a private or charter jet operator, your flights will be private and non-commercial.

Aircraft Services

Aircraft services is a term that encompasses everything from cleaning the interior of your aircraft to any repairs your aircraft needs. You’ll want a FBO airport that has on-the-ground maintenance crews who can service your aircraft like re-fueling, and performing regular maintenance. Having an on-site maintenance crew who handle all of your aircraft servicing is a must, and it will help keep your aircraft in top condition.

Passenger Amenities

Your clients are the core of your business, so choosing an FBO airport that offers extensive passenger amenities just makes sense. Many upscale FBO airports offer a range of amenities, including free WiFi, a passenger lounge, cold and hot drinks, meals and snacks, and even showers for people who have traveled a long way. Whether your clients are waiting for their next flight or deplaning at your airport, their comfort should be your top priority.

As you can see, there are several important elements to consider when choosing an FBO airport for your business. We highly recommend an airport that is conveniently located near your clients’ frequent destinations, an airport that has around-the-clock aircraft servicing from a team of experts, and an airport that has first-rate passenger amenities and customer service.

The cost to buy, rent or build a hangar explained

9 March 2021   Hangar Space

If you’re in the market for hangar space, you may be wondering which option is best: buying, renting, or building an aircraft hangar. It’s essential that you keep your aircraft in a secure hangar to keep it safe from the elements and to keep it in the best condition possible. Depending on where you live, you probably have several choices, including buying or renting hangar space at a large commercial airport, or perhaps at a smaller executive airport.

There are different cost implications for each of these options. In this article, we’ll explain the average costs associated with renting, buying or building a custom aircraft hangar, as well as what you can expect in terms of aircraft maintenance. We highly recommend having a comprehensive understanding of all costs involved before making your choice.

How costs of airplane hangars can vary

The cost of your hangar will largely be determined by what type of aircraft you have. If you have a plane you use for personal recreation and short business trips, your best option is probably renting hangar space. Many public airports build a surplus of hangars and you will most likely be able to find one to rent at a reasonable rate, and renting allows you to be flexible with moving your aircraft base from one location to another if necessary.

Corporate aircrafts are more high-maintenance than personal aircrafts, meaning they must be protected from the elements while not in the air, and they must be ready to fly at any given time. A hangar for a corporate aircraft will be more expensive than a hangar for a personal aircraft. In addition, we recommend hangaring corporate planes somewhere that’s serviced by an on-site aircraft maintenance team

Every airport will have their own hangar rental and purchasing costs that are influenced by a variety of factors, including tax rates, population density, local regulations, and the specifics of your aircraft. Location and convenience also factor into prices.

Other factors to take in consideration

While building custom hangar space is an attractive option because you can build it to your exact specifications, remember that you’ll be responsible for additional costs including building maintenance, repairs, insurance, and utilities. Building your own space also gives you the option to build designated spaces for maintenance.

Renting is an appealing choice to most personal aircraft owners who use their planes for leisure and light business travel. However, before making a choice, find out what services are included in the rental price (like maintenance) and find out if the airport offers around-the-clock on-site aircraft support.

How to prepare your aircraft for winter

2 October 2017   Aircraft Maintenance

Winter is on its way, and along with the fun of the festive season it’s also bringing sleet, snow and ice – none of which are great news for aircraft owners, pilots or charter companies! Prepping your aircraft and storing them correctly are key to making the most of this season as well as reducing repairs and maintenance.

Aircraft maintenance and storage tips from Monmouth Executive Airport

  • Change your oil: Winter is the perfect time to change your oil, removing old oil that is filled with dirt and contaminants. When you do this, be sure to use a preservative oil mixture (one quart of preservative oil is recommended). After doing this, take a quick flight to make sure the engine becomes well-lubricated with the new mixture.
  • Check the sparkplugs: Remove your sparkplugs and spray the fitting with a preservative oil mixture before putting them back into place.
  • Fill your tanks: Even though you won’t be using your aircraft for a while, filling up your fuel tanks to capacity is a good idea. This reduces the moisture that can condense within your tank if it is only partially fuel, and minimizes cracking in flexible rubber tanks. The fuel will easily last the winter, as quality fuel is good for at least a year.
  • Remove your battery: If you’re not going to be flying much this winter, now’s a good time to remove your battery as it likely won’t hold charge while in storage. Store the battery in a safe location out of the cold. You can also hook up your battery to a trickle-charger every few weeks to maintain the charge and keep the battery in good working condition.
  • Critter-proofing: Mice, rats and other small animals will see your aircraft and hangar as a good place to hide out from the bad weather, and they can cause considerable mess and damage to your aircraft. No food should be left in the vicinity and all holes should be securely plugged. Pitot tube covers and vent covers are essential.

4 reasons why hangars are better than tie-downs

23 May 2016   Aircraft Maintenance

When you own an aircraft, there’s one question that stands out above the rest: “What is the best way to store it?” These airplanes and jets are expensive investments and keeping them in good condition means storing them safely and securely – and that means choosing a hangar over a tie-down, says Monmouth Executive Airport, NJ. Here’s why:

  1. Hangars keep your aircraft out of the elements: One of the most costly aspects of owning an aircraft is the constant maintenance and repairs they require to keep them safely in the air. Having your aircraft tied down means that it is exposed to a constant barrage of the elements – burning sunshine, snow, hail and rain – that causes maintenance costs to substantially increase.
  2. Make repairs and maintenance easier: It’s a lot easier to work on your aircraft when it’s in a hangar alongside your tools and equipment and out of the weather. You can take as long as you need to perform your repairs without worrying about tidying up your site or that storm rolling in on the horizon.
  3. Get a break on your insurance: Keeping an aircraft in a hangar is much the same as keeping your car in a garage and, similarly, insurance companies are happy to give you a discount for storing your aircraft in a hangar rather than outdoors.
  4. It’s not always the expensive option you think it is: For obvious reasons, hangars are more expensive than tie-downs – however, that isn’t the end of the story. When you calculate in your reduced insurance costs, and reduced maintenance and repair costs, the increased price is well worth it. And, while you can opt for a private hangar with your own office space, there are more affordable communal hangars and competitive leasing options available.
