The Ultimate Guide to FBO Airports

If you spend enough time around general aviation, you quickly realize that FBOs are the unsung heroes of the experience. They’re the places where private jet passengers unwind, where crews refuel and recharge, and where piston aircraft owners find the support they need before heading back into the sky. No matter why you fly, an FBO is part of the journey.

Here at Monmouth Executive Airport — just an hour from Manhattan and a short hop from the Shore — our FBO operates 24/7 to support pilots, passengers, and Part 135 operators. Whether it’s quick turnaround service or a comfortable place to regroup, we’ve built our operations around convenience and care.

In this guide, we break down what makes FBOs essential, how they’re classified, and the services and benefits you can expect when working with one.

What Does FBO Mean in Aviation?

FBOs are commercial enterprises to which an airport sponsor or airport authority grants the right to operate on an airport and provide aviation services to the general aviation community. The FAA does not regulate FBOs. It does, however, require the airport owner to adhere to specific minimum standards.

Teterboro Airport (Teterboro, New Jersey), Van Nuys Airport (Los Angeles, Florida), and Palm Beach International (West Palm Beach, Florida) are some of the busiest general aviation FBOs in the United States. We’ve said it a few times before, but did you know Monmouth Executive Airport’s main runway, at 7345 ft, is longer than the commercial jet runways at LaGuardia Airport? Arrivals and departures are effortless at Monmouth as we are outside “Class B” airspace.

History and Classification of FBOs

The history of FBOs goes back to the end of World War I (WWI), when airports were in short supply and transient pilots landed in farm fields. The Air Commerce Act of 1926 was established to regulate the civil aviation industry, leading to the FBOs we know today. Monmouth’s history dates back to 1938, when the original owner dragged a section of steel railroad track behind a WWI army tank to clear the land!

FBOs are classified into tiers based on their total revenue and the services they offer.

Tier 1

  • Revenue greater than $25 million per annum
  • Offers a comprehensive range of services, including extensive mechanical services.

Tier 2

  • $10 – 25 million in yearly revenue
  • Offers a range of services, but aircraft servicing is minimal.

Tier 3

  • Revenue less than $10 million per annum
  • Provides only fuel and hangar services to turboprop and piston aircraft.

Services Offered by FBO Airports

The sale of aviation fuel is one of the basic services offered by FBOs. Some FBOs sell aircraft parts and pilot supplies, while others cater to companies providing aerial advertising and crop dusting services. Large private jets, helicopters, and piston aircraft are welcome at Monmouth Executive Airport. In this guide to FBO airports, we share some of the professional services we offer.

  • Fuel, including Avgas and Jet A fuel
  • On-field aircraft maintenance
  • GPU, de-icing, and lavatory servicing
  • Aircraft detailing and cleaning (independent service provider).
  • Catering

What services does an FBO provide to passengers that you also find at Monmouth Jet Center?

  • A comfortable waiting area.

Benefits of Using an FBO Airport

There are several benefits to using an FBO airport. Let’s look at a few of them.

Effortless arrivals and departures. Many FBOs are located in low-traffic airspace, resulting in quick departures and arrivals.

Fast boarding. There are no queues. Passengers only present their identification before boarding.

Personal customer service. FBO airports are uncrowded, allowing staff to provide the personal service clients appreciate.

On-site hangar space. FBOs such as Monmouth have hangar space available, which is convenient for owners and operators.

According to NATA, FBOs are more than facilities serving local pilots; they also “serve as gateways toward encouraging economic investment and links to community businesses beyond the airport boundary.” Monmouth Jet Center is proud to serve as a link to the Wall Township community in New Jersey.

Monmouth Executive Airport (BLM) is an attractive alternative to crowded New York City, Philadelphia, and Jersey Shore gateway airports. We are only a 20-minute helicopter ride to the center of Manhattan.
