The Importance of Aviation in Modern Society

Millions of Americans fly home for Thanksgiving or travel to other countries for vacation. Flying is part of everyday life, illustrating the social importance of aviation in modern society. It also has economic benefits and significantly contributes to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the United States and countries worldwide.

At Monmouth Executive Airport, only a short helicopter ride or an hour’s drive from Manhattan, you can enjoy the professional FBO services we offer pilots, passengers, and part 135 operators. Join us as we discuss the aviation industry’s impact, the importance of air traffic controllers, and reflect on the airport and tourism connection.

Introduction to the Aviation Industry

The aviation industry facilitates tourism and business activities while directly and indirectly creating millions of jobs. It is divided into general and commercial aviation.

General aviation includes recreational flying and a range of aerial work such as pipeline patrols, firefighting, medevac operations, and more. Charter services and private-use airports like Monmouth Executive Airport are part of the business aviation sector, with the majority being small- to midsize businesses.

Most consumers are familiar with the commercial aviation industry, as it involves the operation of commercial airports, airlines, and aircraft. Did you know FedEx is the largest domestic air freight carrier in the country by a large margin, followed by UPS and Qatar Airways?

Impact of the Aviation Industry

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a trade association representing 340 of the world’s airlines, which carry 80% of global air traffic. Their 2024 full-year global passenger market performance statistics show the following:

  • 22.9% is North America’s share of the world air passenger market
  • Asia-Pacific has the world’s largest air passenger market, at 33.5%, followed by Europe’s 26.7%.

What about the United States? Airlines for America (A4A), the trade association for leading U.S. passenger and cargo carriers, states commercial aviation drives more than 10 million American jobs. They provide the following statistics:

  • Commercial aviation drives 5% of U.S. GDP, which equals $1.45 trillion (2024).
  • U.S. airlines operate 27,000 flights carrying 2.7 million passengers to and from nearly 80 countries daily.
  • U.S. commercial airlines carry 61,000 tons of cargo daily to and from more than 220 countries.

Important People in Aviation: Air Traffic Controllers

Air traffic controllers are some of the most important people in the aviation industry as they guide us safely to our destinations. In the U.S., they are categorized into tower, terminal radar, and en route controllers. What are their responsibilities?

Tower controller. These are the most visible controllers, as they work in the glassed-in towers at airports and manage traffic from the airport to a radius of 3 to 30 miles out.

Terminal radar controller. Controllers working in radar rooms assist aircraft until they reach the edge of the airport’s airspace, which is usually 20 to 50 miles out and up to 17,000 feet.

En route center controller. Working in centers across the country, these controllers direct the aircraft for most of its flight and are responsible for more than 100,000 square miles of airspace in the United States.

Importance of Airports in Tourism Industry

New York City hosted approximately 64 million visitors in 2024, of which nearly 20% were international. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, 145.9 million air passengers used John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International, and New York Stewart International airports in 2024.

Airports are interconnected with the cities and communities they serve, whether locals, business visitors, or national and international tourists. Visitors use hotels for accommodation and various transport methods to visit museums, theatres, restaurants, and bars. They shop at retail stores and support small businesses. Their presence generates revenue, taxes, and local jobs.

Monmouth Executive Airport is an attractive alternative to crowded New York City, Philadelphia, and Jersey Shore gateway airports. The commercial and tourism-related importance of aviation cannot be overestimated. Contact us today for more information on our FBO services or visit us at: https://monmouthjetcenter.com/
