Key Factors That Shape the Cost of Aviation Today
The cost of aviation is high. That is a reality we face daily at Monmouth Executive Airport, NJ. However, we are driven by our passion, just like the many pilots and aircraft owners who use our airport for business, leisure, and flight training.
It takes grit to earn a student pilot license and a private pilot license (PPL). You sacrifice a lot for the freedom flying offers, but it’s all worth it. In this article, we explore the costs of flight school and aircraft ownership. We also highlight flight training financing options and share the flight schools you’ll find here at Monmouth Jet Center.
Cost of Flight School and Training Expenses
A PPL is only the start for those who want to build a career in the aviation industry. They will undergo additional training to obtain an instrument rating (IR), multi-engine rating (MEL), commercial pilot license (CPL), or airline transport pilot (ATP) license.
Ground school, study materials and gear, the computer-based knowledge test, and medical certification for a PPL all carry costs. However, the costliest training expense is accumulating the required flying hours. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires people applying for a PPL in airplanes, helicopters, and gyroplanes to log at least 40 hours of flight time, divided as follows:
- 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor (minimum)
- 10 hours of solo flight training in the appropriate areas of operation
- 3 hours of cross-country flight
- 3 hours of night flight
- 3 hours of instrument time.
Aircraft Ownership Costs Beyond Training
Flying is a joy, but owning an aircraft is expensive. Some people prefer hiring an airplane to build flying hours, while others need an aircraft full-time and become owners. The cost of aviation includes the following ownership expenses.
- Hourly operating
- Direct out-of-pocket expenses such as landing fees, oil, and fuel.
- Fixed expenses include hangar rental, insurance, tiedown fees, loan interest, state and local taxes, and the annual inspection fee.
- Variable expenses for unscheduled maintenance, such as a new starter or compliance with airworthiness directives (ADs).
- Scheduled Maintenance
- Manufacturer-required maintenance as per the aircraft maintenance manual (AMM)
- Preventive maintenance as required by the FAA.
- 100-Hour Inspection.
- Overhaul reserve
Setting money aside monthly for major expenses such as airframe, engine, propeller, and avionics overhauls.
Flight Training Financing Options Explained
Very few aspiring pilots can pay for their flight training directly, but there are financing options available. The first step is to reach out to the flight schools you are interested in and determine the following:
- Are they nationally accredited? It can affect the type of loan you can take out.
- Do they accept loans as payment?
- Does the flight school offer loans, scholarships, or financial assistance?
If the flying school does accept loans, the next step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It determines your eligibility for federal student loans, federal grants, and state and institutional aid. Airline-specific training programs are an alternative if you ultimately want to become a commercial pilot, as they pay for your training costs.
How Much Does Flight Training Cost Across NJ?
The cost of aviation flight training varies between flight schools due to factors such as training aircraft type, instructor rates, fuel prices, and geographic location. Flight schools located in urban areas or those offering accelerated programs typically charge higher rates, while rural and smaller schools have more affordable hourly rates.
We host two highly reputable flight schools at Monmouth Executive Airport – Eagles View Aviation and Elite Flight Experience. The team at Eagles View Aviation has been offering flight training for over three decades. Elite Flight Experience is a Cirrus Platinum Partner Training Center. Their flight instructors are ATP-rated and are specifically certified by Cirrus to train pilots in Cirrus aircraft.
