First Solo Flight Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Your first solo flight. How can something be so exhilarating and terrifying at the same time? At Monmouth Executive Airport (KBLM), we enjoy the experience with every student who started at the Young Aviators Club and eventually joined one of the flight schools at our airport. The aviation industry offers exciting career paths, and the first solo flight is a major step!
Decades of aeronautical industry experience and knowledge of NJ weather taught us that preparation is key to ensuring pilots reach their destination safely. Let’s explore some common mistakes to avoid before your first solo takeoff.
Know Your Aircraft Before Takeoff
You have flown many hours with an instructor in the airplane you are taking solo. Don’t assume you know everything about the plane. The solo flight is going to be stressful despite the hours of training you received, and you need to be confident about the airplane you are taking up. Familiarize yourself, once again, with the layout, systems, and components of the aircraft.
The next step is the preflight checklist, which the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) describes as “a thorough and systematic means by which a pilot determines if an aircraft is airworthy and in condition for safe operation.” Take your time with the checklist. Document your findings, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance if you are unsure about a component or have concerns.
Why Pre-Flight Planning Makes a Big Difference
Bypassing pre-flight planning is an unacceptable legal and safety risk. Here are a few reasons why pre-flight planning makes a difference.
- ARROW
The airplane will be flying illegally without the following documents in the cockpit:
- Airworthiness certificate
- Registration
- Radio station license
- Operating limitation documents
- Weight and balance information.
- Aircraft logs
If you did not check the aircraft logs and the required aircraft inspections are out of date, you will be cited for flying an unairworthy airplane.
- Visual fuel check
Check the accuracy of the fuel gauges with a clean, calibrated dipstick to verify the indicated fuel quantity, or you might have insufficient fuel for your proposed flight.
- Emergency checklists
Review relevant emergency checklists, such as engine fire on engine start, aborted takeoff, and engine failure on takeoff, to place the information in your short-term memory for quicker recall.
Get a Weather Briefing Every Time You Fly in NJ
You woke up to a beautiful sunny day for your first solo flight at Monmouth Executive Airport, NJ. The skies are blue, and there is not a cloud in sight. The average person does not realize these weather conditions could cause clear air turbulence (CAT), an invisible turbulence that makes it more difficult to gauge altitude and distance.
Federal aviation regulations require pilots to obtain a weather briefing to learn about the weather that might affect their flight. Source your standard briefing from an FAA Flight Service Station (FSS), as the briefers are trained to help pilots understand the weather. The information makes it easier to complete the weather briefing checklist.
Flight Instructor Endorsement Is More Than a Signature at MJC
The flight instructor endorsement for your first solo flight is more than a signature at Monmouth Jet Centre (MJC). It is a welcome to the Monmouth Executive Airport family! We are committed to supporting our Wall Township community and know an endorsement is the first step to a brighter future for student pilots.
That is why we host only the best flight schools at our airport, whether you are soloing through Elite Flight Experience or Eagles View Flight School. Elite Flight Experience is a Cirrus Platinum Partner Training Center with Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)-rated flight instructors. Eagles View Flight School has been training pilots on single- and double-engine aircraft since 1993!
Monmouth Executive Airport is located in a low-traffic airspace corridor, which is ideal for student pilots taking their first solo flight. Contact us today for more information on our airport, or visit us at: https://monmouthjetcenter.com/
