Types of Hangar Doors in NJ and Which One Fits Your Aircraft
Hangars are more than an airplane garage. They can store a single turboprop, serve as an aircraft maintenance facility, or house corporate flight operators that require office areas, lounges, and restrooms for clients. Hangars must also comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), local, and state building requirements.
Monmouth Executive Airport offers a selection of airplane hangar spaces in NJ. Why should you choose our facilities? We are a low-traffic Class G airport, only a 20-minute helicopter flight from the center of Manhattan, and our 7,371 ft runway is longer than the commercial jet runways at LaGuardia Airport. Our airport and FBO are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In this article, we discuss various types of hangar doors and provide more information about the aircraft hangar solutions available at Monmouth Executive Airport.
Understanding How Doors Influence Hangar Design
Hangar doors serve three primary purposes: protection, security, and operational efficiency. The type of door used in the hangar design must align with its intended use.
Single-plane hangar
Although protection from the weather and security are important for all aircraft owners, the hangar door must be easy to use since the pilot is generally the only person accessing the hangar.
Maintenance hangar
Maintenance hangars are used for servicing, repairing, and maintaining aircraft that belong to multiple owners. Security and protection are of primary importance. However, the maintenance company also requires doors that allow aircraft to exit the hangar without inconveniencing teams working on other airplanes.
Part 135 operator
Private jet charter companies and corporate flight operations have staff who are based permanently at the hangar. There are times when it’s more efficient to open smaller portions of the hangar door, which should be considered in the hangar design.
Sliding Hangar Doors and Bottom Rolling Hangar Doors
Bottom rolling hangar doors, also known as sliding hangar doors, are the most widely used type of aircraft hangar door. A rail is embedded in the foundation of the hangar, along which roller wheels attached to the bottom of the door move.
They are ideal for very large hangars, as other types of hangar doors would be impractical due to the required weight. Sliding hangar doors are configured to maximize space inside the hangar and can be powered or unpowered. Bottom rolling doors are opened fully for larger airplanes, while portions of the door are opened for smaller aircraft.
What to Know About Hydraulic and Bi-Fold Hangar Doors in NJ
Hydraulic hangar doors open up like ordinary garage doors. They are constructed from a single panel and move from a vertical closed position to an open position with the assistance of hydraulic cylinders. They are lightweight and allow for additional headspace at the entrance of the hangar but seal tightly when closed. This type of door is ideal for small-to medium-sized aircraft.
Bi-fold hangar doors open outward, folding in half as they are raised with steel cables or heavy nylon straps. They are easy to use but move more slowly than hydraulic hangar doors and require more vertical headroom in the hangar. This type of door can be used when individual bays within a T-hangar are rented out.
