Explore Aircraft Detailing For A Shiny Finish

Aircraft detailing protects your investment and should ideally be done by professionals. Monmouth Jet Center has an on-site aircraft cleaning and detailing service provider available 24/7 to address your needs, whether an interior quick-turn service or full exterior detailing. They have the expertise and equipment to clean and detail prop planes and corporate jets.

Do you prefer to detail your own aircraft? Check your plane’s maintenance manual for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations on cleaning products and methods to use. Safety is always the first consideration, and we suggest the following:

  • Ensure you comply with all the relevant health and safety requirements, including those set by the airport where you are based.
  • Detail your aircraft in a well-lit hangar and always work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear safety glasses and a facemask, and use a camping headlamp.

Here are a few suggestions that could make your aircraft detailing easier.

Make Sure You Have the Correct Detailing Tools

The correct detailing tools will make the cleaning process easier. Use a ladder or small portable scaffold when washing the upper portion of the aircraft, and only step on areas designated for that purpose in smaller planes. Use a microfiber, low-lint, or soft cotton cloth to clean most areas and use an up-and-down motion for your windows. Spray the nose/props and leading edge with a bug remover before you begin washing. It softens the insect residue, making it easier to remove. Tape areas such as static ports and pitot tubes off with painter’s tape and leave a long streamer in place to ensure you open them up after completing the detailing.

Chemical Applications for Cleaning Your Aircraft

We reiterate that any chemical applications used on your aircraft must be approved by the OEM, as standard commercial or household cleaning products can damage it. Boeing, AMS, and SMI offer a range of certified cleaning products that are safe to use. Take care when doing the windows during your exterior detailing. Use a spray polish intended for your window type, as glass window polish can cause unsightly scratches on acrylic windows and windshields.

Airplane Waxing Is Important – Here’s Why

Some pilots feel airplane waxing adds a few additional knots of airspeed, but this is a well-debated issue in the industry. Waxing the exterior airplane does, however, cover it with a protective film that provides a smooth, sleek coating. It preserves and protects the airplane’s body from wear and ensures insects and dust come off easier. Silicone-based waxes enhance older paint by increasing water resistance and adding shine.

Preserve Your Aircraft Shine With Ceramic Coating

Why should you preserve your aircraft with a ceramic coating after cleaning it? The coating is UV resistant and will protect your plane from fading and UV damage. It provides a very hydrophobic surface that repels dirt and stains. There is one safety concern when you use a ceramic coating. It can cause static to build up on some planes. Check with your aircraft manufacturer to ensure the coating does not create issues with your plane’s avionics.
