What are the responsibilities and authorities of a pilot?

1 August 2021   General Pilots

Do you dream about becoming a pilot and exploring the sky? Aside from flying the plane, perhaps you’re curious about the various responsibilities and authorities that come with being a pilot. Here at Monmouth Airport, we’ve helped many people achieve their dream of taking to the sky and becoming a certified pilot, but it’s important to know everything that’s required to do the job before deciding if this is the career path for you.

In this article, we’ll discuss some of the main responsibilities and authorities of most pilots, and hopefully this information will be helpful to you in pursuing a potential new career.

Checking the aircraft:

You may have thought that aircraft mechanics are responsible for conducting pre-flight aircraft inspections, but actually, the pilot is responsible for checking the aircraft and the aircraft controls. Pilots do a walk-around before every flight to ensure the aircraft is in top working condition and that there are no concerns.

Monitoring weather conditions and making calculations:

Pilots often deal with extreme weather conditions and they must determine if it’s safe to fly. From heavy snow to lightning storms to extreme heat, inclement weather affects the aircraft. They must also make correct calculations for takeoff using information like wind speed, aircraft weight, and flight path.

Planning flight paths:

Pilots are responsible for planning their flight paths and finding the optimal routes for travel. It’s not like driving to a new destination in a car where you simply put the address into your GPS and follow the route. Pilots must also take into consideration all the other flights happening at the same time in the same vicinity, and ensure there is enough space to follow their route safely.

Recording flight logs:

Pilots must record a flight log for every single flight they make to ensure accurate records are kept. The flight log includes general information about the aircraft, as well as particular flight data, discrepancies, maintenance, and personnel on board.
